Picture

Introduction:

Located in the eastern section of the downtown core, along the western banks of the Los Angeles River and easily accessed by three major arterial freeways, the Los Angeles Arts District has evolved into one of the country’s most talked about, imaginative, authentic and upscale urban neighborhoods. Fewer than forty square blocks of historical brick, concrete and wood beamed industrial warehouses and manufacturing plants, accented by the colorful character of local artists' murals and repurposed compelling architecture which encompass this unique neighborhood.

Upon completion, AT MATEO will become the social epicenter of the Arts District, providing locals and visitors with artisan eateries and drinking establishments,  fashion-forward retailers and local services which complement the avant garde and sophisticated culture of the neighborhood.

NEIGHBORHOOD - Arts District

From vineyards to warehouses to a culturally significant community.

THE HISTORY OF THE ARTS DISTRICT

The Arts District history begins with its development into acres of vineyards and citrus orchards by Los Angeles’ pioneers of the late 19th century. By the early 1920’s, the growing demand for warehouses and shipping depots coupled with a manufacturing boom, and the inception of transcontinental rail transportation, spurred economic growth and the development of Los Angeles as a major West Coast logistics hub. During this time the street-scape and much of the building inventory we know today was developed in the Arts District.
